TRUMAN DOCUMENT THAT MENTIONS CONCRETE.

2       HARRY TRUMAN (President) 1884-1972 One page, legal size, DOCUMENT SIGNED. The document is dated October 26, 1927 and is a Notice to Contractors concerning a bid for construction of a “Foot Bridge over the Missouri Pacific Railroad Tracks at 15th Street and Appleton Avenue.” It is further noted on the document that “A deposit of two dollars will be required upon plans and specifications and if plans are not returned within 60days the money to be forfeited.”  The document has been approved and SIGNED by Truman as Presiding Judge of Jackson County, Missouri.  This is an interesting document as it lists the specific quantities of work and materials to be used. Among the items listed are Class “B” and Class “C” concrete.  Truman had the help of political boss Tom Pendergast to thank for his political success and when, with Pendergast‘s help, Truman was elected to the Senate many labeled Truman as the “Senator from Pendergast”.  While there is no way to know for sure where the concrete that was used in this bid came from, Pendergast owned the Ready-Mixed Concrete company  and this company was awarded many government contracts and it would certainly come as no surprise if the company that chose to use his concrete company was awarded the bid!  Of all the documents concerning Truman I have owned this is the only piece that I can recall seeing that had any specific connection with concrete…199.00

6       [JOHN F. KENNEDY] 1917-1963 Lot consists of a 7 inch in diameter salad plate used by the Kennedy’s aboard the Presidential yacht, the U.S.S. Honey Fitz.  The plate has a gold outer rim and a second gold rim around the inner portion of the plate. At the top is embossed in gold the symbol of the American eagle. The Honey Fitz was originally the 8th Presidential Yacht and was built in 1931. Originally named the Lenore, the boat was used as a training ship for submarine crews during WW II and later was used as an escort for the Presidential Yacht Williamsburg.  In 1953 President Eisenhower retired the Williamsburg from active service and after extensive refurnishing and overhauling the Lenore was renamed the Barbara Ann in honor of Eisenhower’s granddaughter.  With the inauguration of Kennedy, the yacht was renamed the Honey Fitz in honor of JFK’s maternal grandfather, John Francis Fitzgerald. The yacht would continue to be used by Johnson and Nixon (Nixon would rename the yacht, the Tricia, after his daughter).  The yacht was auctioned off in 1971. The Kennedy’s did not have a formal dining set at the White House, preferring to use the china from past presidents and in particular that used by President Harry Truman.  To the best of my knowledge, this is as close as you can get to “Presidential Kennedy China”.  Included with the plate are photocopies of letters from Seaman Duck (who worked aboard the Honey Fitz) and Ted Kennedy. The copy of the notarized letter from Seaman Duck reads as follows: I certify that this set of dishes were used by the Kennedy family and members of the White House staff.  Came from U.S.S. Honey Fitz yacht and were given to me by the Kennedy administration. R.C. Duck, U.S.N. EM 2. Also included is a copy of a typed letter of Edward Kennedy on the imprinted stationery of the US Senate (Dated August 24, 1970). In part the letter reads: The dishes you purchased do appear to be the ones used on the Honey Fitz. There is no official record that they were given to Seaman Duck, who did serve on the Honey Fitz while President Kennedy was in office. I hope this information will be helpful to you. Edward M. Kennedy.  This is an outstanding piece of Americana and an outstanding display piece.  The salad plate with the accompanying letters…995.00

Floyd was arguably the first agent in baseball history.  He acted as the “go-between” for Mike Kelly and the Boston National League club, the Boston Beaneaters.  In 1889 Goodwin became a member of the governing committee of the newly created Actors Amateur Athletic Association. When Kelly and this then Chicago teammates won the pennant in 1885, Goodwin and Floyd treated the team to a performance of The Skating Rink at Hooley’s Theater in Chicago. After the first act, Goodwin presented the Captain-Manager, Cap Anson with a solid silver facsimile of a league baseball. ZACHARY TAYLOR, HIS CABINET AND OVER
250 MEMBERS OF THE 31ST CONGRESS

44         ZACHARY TAYLOR (Twelfth President of the United States- 1849-1850) I am pleased to offer a truly historical and possible unique signed autograph book. The autograph album (hard cover book) was obtained by Pennsylvania House of Representative member Milo Melankthon Dimmick in April of 1850, just months before the death of President Taylor (July 9, 1850).  On the first page are the signatures of Taylor and his entire cabinet (vice president Fillmore is not included). The names on the first page are: Zachary Taylor (President), John Clayton (Secretary of State), William Meredith (Secretary of the Treasury), George Crawford (Secretary of War), Reverdy Johnson (Attorney General), William Preston (Secretary of the Navy) and Thomas Ewing (Secretary of the Interior).  Following the President and Cabinet are approximately 250 additional signatures of members of the Senate and House of Representatives.  All the signatures are on one side of the sheet only (With the exception of one page which fortunately does not bear any of the “big” names.).  Each signer has added the state they represent below their signature.  There is some separation of the pages from the spine and the cover is well worn but the signature pages are in nice condition and all the signatures are still bold and dark. While not every member of Congress is in the book, there are a number of great names such as William Seward, Jefferson Davis, Steven Douglas, Horace Mann, Alexander Stephens and Andrew Johnson.  To find an album that has this many members of Congress (none are tipped in or have been added) is extremely rare (to say the least) and is an outstanding piece of American History.  I rarely state that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity but in over 40 years this is the most complete set of signatures from this Congress that I have seen…8,950.00 (Net to all)

Truman, being first duly sworn upon my oath, state that in filing my report of expenditures as required by the United States code and by the statues of Missouri, I, by inadvertence, error and mistake, overlooked to include an item for expense of telephone and telegrams in the sum of Three hundred ($300.00) dollars, and a further item of expense for stamps and stationery in the sum of five hundred ($500.00) Dollars. These items of expense should be added to the items previously reported by me. The document has then been SIGNED by Truman and his lawyer, Rufus Burrus. Any document relating to an official run for office is rare and is seldom offered to the general public. This is an out standing piece of history and worthy of any presidential collection…995.00

AUTHOR OF LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY AND THE SECRET GARDEN

56         FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT (Author) 1849-1924 Lot consists of a SIGNED 2 ½ x 4 card. Burnett has penned: Yours Sincerely, Frances Hodgson Burnett, April, 1893.  Burnett was a playwright and novelist and wrote a number of well known books such as Esmeralda (1881) and Dawn of a Tomorrow (1909) but she is best remembered for writing Little Lord Fauntleroy (1888) and The Secret Garden (1911). The Secret Garden was performed as a musical on Broadway in 1991 and than made into a very successful film in 1993. Little Lord Fauntleroy was first made into a movie in 1921 and starred Mary Pickford.  This is a nice example and suitable for display…49.00

57      [THE WRIGHT BROTHERS]  W.J. Tate (Lighthouse Keeper near Kitty Hawk) Lot consists of a one page AUTOGRAPHED LETTER written to  Reverend Cornelius Greenway, a well known autograph collector in the middle of the 20th century.  Greenway wrote Tate asking him who was sitting in the plane when it first took off at Kitty Hawk. Obviously when the letter was written in 1941 Greenway knew full well who was in the plane when it first flew but he was obviously trying to get Tate to put it in his own words.  Tate responded to the letter on the back of Greenway’s letter and wrote that all the facts of the flight are in a booklet and Greenway is free to buy one!   At the end of the letter Tate tells Greenway that he is including his copy for Greenway to look at but Tate will be expecting my copy back from you in 10 days.  The letter has some breaks in the folds but overall is in fine condition. Tate was involved in sending weather reports to the Wright Brothers and the decision as to when to attempt the flight was based on his reports. During the Wright Brothers first stay in Kitty Hawk they stayed with the Tates.  Tate later wrote a commemorative booklet on the 25th anniversary of the 1st successful flight and in part he wrote: The mental attitude of the natives toward the Wrights was that they were a simple pair of harmless cranks that were wasting their time at a fool attempt to do something that was impossible.  It was in Tate’s yard at Kitty Hawk that the first experimental glider was assembled in 1900.  This is a nice association piece from one of the participants at Kitty Hawk…75.00

45         CARRIE CHAPMAN CATT (Suffragette) 1859-1947 Lot consists of a CLIPPED SIGNATURE (1x3). The signature has been priced accordingly at…29.00

There is one very small tear in the right hand border (that could easily be matted out), otherwise the piece is in near mint condition. This is simply an outstanding display piece…29.00
