The Riggs bank was started in 1836 by a small brokerage house. In 1840 the bank became known as Corcoran & Riggs and in 1844 the US Government assigned this bank as the only federal depository in Washington.  Corcoran & Riggs financed Samuel Morse’s invention of the telegraph in 1845 and lent 16 million to the US Government in 1847 to pay for the Mexican-American War. They also provided 7.2 million in gold to the government for the purchased of Alaska in 1868.  In 1854 the bank was renamed Riggs & Co. and in 1896, after accepting a government charter, was renamed Riggs National Bank. In 1909 the bank president presented a plan to Congress for economic relief.  As a result many financial reforms were implemented as well as the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913.  By the 1950’s most embassies in Washington were customers of Riggs.  In later years it was found the 2 of the 9/11 hijackers had bank accounts with Riggs and the bank was also involved in handling funds for Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile.
